E15 sales in Minnesota fell below the 6-million gallon mark in March as traffic in the state came to a halt following a peacetime emergency declaration in the state to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

A bipartisan group of 24 senators, led by Sen. Tina Smith, have sent a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to reject requests from five state governors to have the RFS waived. 

Aid Is Needed Now

The COVID-19 pandemic is crippling the ethanol industry and help is needed now, not later. 

The latest coronavirus relief package introduced in the US House of Representatives includes the Renewable Fuel Reimbursement Program which provides financial relief for the ethanol industry.

Sen. Chuck Grassley and Sen. Amy Klobuchar have introduced legislation to reimburse ethanol producers for feedstock purchases made in the first quarter of this year to provide the industry with some much-needed relief.

E15 sales in Minnesota totaled 3.82 million gallons in April - the lowest monthly volume since September 2018 - due to the state's stay-at-home order to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. 

5.42 Million Gallons of E15 Sold in May

After two straight months of declining sales, E15 sales in Minnesota in May turned a corner and climbed up to 5.42 million gallons as the state's stay-at-home order expired. 

The Congressional Biofuel Caucus, led by Minnesota's Rep. Collin Peterson, is asking Senate and House leaders to include aid for the ethanol industry in the next coronavirus relief package.
