According to the data, a total of 7.25 million barrels (304.7 million gallons) of ethanol was consumed in 2015 compared to 7.1 million barrels (298.53 million gallons) in 2014 while gasoline consumption remained flat at 58.13 million barrels in 2015.
This in turn raised ethanol's share of Minnesota's transportation fuel market to 12.47 percent in 2015 from 12.23 percent previously.
With the volume of E85 sold in 2015 largely the same as the amount sold in 2014, it's likely the increase in ethanol consumption was driven by E15 sales.
The data from the EIA shows ethanol comprised over 10 percent of transportation fuel in 26 states (which includes the District of Columbia) in 2015 compared to 21 states in 2014.
