E15 Is Back!

The end of summer also signals the end of the reid vapor pressure (RVP) season, which means all vehicles 2001 and newer can once again use E15.

If you are one of those confused by the statement above, you're not alone. The RVP is set by the EPA (who else?) in the summer months to reduce evaporation of fuel from cars and from storage and transfer equipment. The RVP limit is 9.0 PSI during the summer. The Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) says the PSI for E10 increases by 1 in summer but the EPA has since granted an RVP waiver for E10. While the waiver doesn’t apply to E15, analysis by NREL concludes that the RVP for E15 and E10 are indistinhuishable. Yet the folks at the EPA don't seem to get this (among other things).

So, in a nutshell, E15 wasn't sold in the summer months to vehicles 2001 and newer except for flex fuel vehicles (apparently the RVP doesn't apply for flex fuels. We can't understand this either).

Thankfully the RVP season is over and we can get back to using E15. Better still, there are now even more stations offering E15 (36 in the state). Of these 36, 17 are located in the Twin Cities metro area. The new locations in the Twin Cities with E15 include the following (click on the links to get the addresses and directions):

St Paul

Richfield

Rosemount

Hastings

Outside the metro, there are now stations that dispense E15 in :

St Cloud

Belle Plain

New Prague

Princeton

Bemidji
