The MPCA said warmer temperatures, moisture and low wind conditions are causing fine particle formation and trapping them near the ground.
"Elevated fine particle levels will persist into Sunday, when a cold front is expected to move into Minnesota, shifting winds and enhancing mixing into the atmosphere," it said, adding Air Quality Index readings are expected to reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Thankfully, however, there is access to cleaner fuels like E15 (can be used by all 2001 and newer vehicles) and E85 (can only be used by flex-fuel vehicles) which will help reduce pollution in the air over this weekend.
Based on data from the Energy Information Administration, E85 emits 13.75 lbs of CO2 compared to 18.95 lbs in regular E10 gasoline or 19.64 lbs in non-ethanol blended gasoline. E15 emits 18.59 lbs of CO2.
As the MPCA itself points out, fine particles are produced from combustion activities, including fossil fuel-based energy generation and motor vehicle exhaust.
"Conserving energy, buying clean renewable power and using alternate means of transportation, such as mass transit, will all reduce your daily contribution to air pollution," it said.
The MPCA added that exposure to high levels of fine particles is linked with both respiratory and cardiovascular health effects. As such, if you are going on the road this weekend, make sure you use E15 or E85. To find E15 or E85, please go to mnbiofuels.org/map.
