Ethanol was 12.4 percent of all transportation fuel consumed in Minnesota in 2016, according to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

At 12.4 percent, Minnesota's ethanol consumption ratio was the highest in the nation. Iowa had the second highest with ethanol comprising 11.37 percent of all fuel consumed in the state.

Both states were joined by 29 other states that breached the oil industry's fictitious 10 percent "blend wall" in 2016. Out of the 31 states where ethanol was over 10 percent of all fuel consumed, five were new entries - Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

Overall, ethanol had a 10.02 share of the fuel consumed in the United States in 2016.

In 2016, 7.59 million barrels (319.15 million gallons) of ethanol was consumed in Minnesota compared to 7.25 million (304.7 million gallons) in 2015 as overall transportation fuel usage grew to 61.11 million barrels (2.56 billion gallons) in 2016 from 58.13 million barrels (2.44 billion gallons) the previous year.

Nonetheless, consumption of blends like E85 and E15 would have been a big factor in pushing ethanol's overall share of Minnesota's transportation fuel market to 12.4 percent in 2016.
